Natasha and Tyler’s Appalachian Couples Session by Los Angeles Wedding Photographer Brandi Potter
I’m not really going to talk about how much of a goddess Natasha is or how amazing her and Tyler are together, but I am going to talk about Appalachia. If you don’t know me you probably don’t know that I grew up in Eastern KY. Literally the farthest east you can get. It’s one of the poorest areas in the country, but I never saw that when I was younger.
I moved to central KY for college the week after I graduated, but by that time I was itching to get away from the mountains and the small town life. I didn’t really appreciate the beauty of the place until a couple of years ago. I think photography helped me with that. Being away and going home two or three times a year will also do that. And let me preface a lot of this by saying that most of my family is still in Appalachia, and I really do love being there, but it makes me so sad.
Coal companies literally rip the tops of mountains off for coal. They’re drilling for natural gas. The water supply there is awful and most people won’t even drink the tap water. There is trash everywhere, and a lot of the people that do live there do not value the area. They don’t see the beauty in it. They don’t see that what they do is hurting the place they claim to love so much.
I’m not going to go into all of my grievances with the area, but I really hope that the people back home can see these photos and see how beautiful the place is. I want them to start taking care of the area. I want them to pick up the trash and not to spray paint the naturally beautiful areas (talking about Mars that was recently tagged), I want them to prosecute people that do destroy the beauty, and I want people to be held accountable for their actions. This is the only home most of you will get, why would you want it to be destroyed?
Appreciate the beauty. Go camping. Go hiking. Drive around, but don’t leave a trace that you were there.
